Oat Milk

If you’re like me and love oat milk but cannot justify the $5 price point at the supermarket, this DIY oat milk is for you, at a mere cost of 46c for about 750ml. It’s extra creamy and smooth and perfect for your coffee or as cow’s milk substitute. No fancy equipment is needed and the whole process takes under ten minutes. Plus you’re left with ‘oat pulp’ which can be repurposed in many ways (eg. chocolate chip cookies…need I say more) so make sure you store it in the fridge for another time. I’d call this a #moneywin and a #zerofoodwastewin. Let’s get into it.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of rolled oats

  • 3 cups of chilled, filtered water

  • pinch of salt

  • 1 pitted date (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Method

In a blender or food processor, high power blitz the rolled oats, water and salt (and date/vanilla extract if using) for 5-10 seconds.

Over a large bowl, place a cheesecloth/muslin cloth/clean Chux cloth/produce bag with small holes, and pour over oat mixture.

Squeeze out the liquid from the cloth with your hands into the bowl. You could also do double strain here if you like.

Funnel the oat milk from the bowl to a glass bottle and store in the fridge. Shake before use.

Store the oat pulp in the fridge too in a container until needed.
